Release of HDF5 version 1.0.0

We are pleased to announce the first official release of HDF5, version 1.0.0.

HDF5 is a completely new file format and library designed to address some of the limitations of the HDF4 library, and to address current and anticipated requirements of modern systems and applications.

Improvements over HDF4 include support for large files and datasets (>2GB), a simpler data model and a better engineered library and API.

This first release ONLY officially includes support for the serial implementation of HDF5. The parallel implementation is in place, but we have encountered some problems with it. Feel free to try it, as long as you keep in mind that it has some problems.

Platforms Supported

This release has been tested on UNIX platforms only; specifically: Linux, FreedBSD, IRIX, Solaris & Dec UNIX.

HDF 4.1r2 Windows NT/95 Release with DLL Support

A new release of HDF 4.1r2 for Windows NT/95 is available. New in this release is the support for multi-threaded DLL import libraries.

The HDF library names have changed with this release. Please see STEP III, 'Building the Libraries, tests and utilities', in the install_NT_95 file for more details on the libraries that get created.
